Highway Code · Rule 163

To empower Urban cyclists and to help educate drivers.

The Highway Code has plenty to say about keeping cyclists safe, but most drivers never read it. So we put the rules where they cannot be missed: on your back, in bold type, in hi-vis. Conspicuous by design.

The rules that define your space

Know the Code and you can hold your line with confidence. These are the rules that put the law on your side, straight from the Highway Code.

Rule 72Your positioning

The one most drivers have never read, and it settles how far from the kerb to ride. Ride in the centre of the lane on quiet roads, in slower traffic, and at junctions or narrow sections where it would be unsafe for drivers to overtake. On busier, faster roads, move left to allow overtaking only where it is safe, and even then keep at least 0.5 metres from the kerb, and further where that is safer. Taking the primary position is the Code telling you to, not you being obstructive.

Rule 163The 1.5 metre rule

Drivers should leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking you at up to 30mph, and more at higher speeds.

Rule 212As much room as a car

Drivers should give you at least as much room as they would give a car.

Rule 213Room to react

Drivers must expect you to move suddenly to avoid drain covers, potholes and wet patches, and give room accordingly.

Rule H3No cutting across

A driver should not cut across you when turning into or out of a junction. They must wait for a gap. This covers the left hook and the right turn across you.

Rule H1The hierarchy

Those who can do the greatest harm bear the greatest responsibility. It reframes every ambiguous situation in your favour.

Rule 66Two abreast

You may ride two abreast.

Rule 140Mandatory cycle lanes

A MUST NOT. Drivers may not drive or park in a mandatory cycle lane (solid white line) during its hours of operation.

Rule 178Advanced stop boxes

Another MUST NOT. Drivers may not encroach past the first stop line into an advanced stop box on red.
